WSOP Notebook: Isildur1 arrives, Mike Sexton and more
The 2012 WSOP is now almost officially in full swing with 10 winners and a number of interesting stories having come out of the series.
Here is a look at some of the stories from yesterday’s action:
Viktor Blom makes World Series debut in Event #12 at the 2012 WSOP
The much awaited debut of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom came in the second week of the 2012 WSOP, as he for his first ever WSOP tournament, the $10k Heads-Up NLHE Championship.
Blom is one of the best-known and most talked about poker players in the past few years, and his WSOP debut is probably the second most anticipated of the online poker era, being trumped only by Tom “durrrr” Dwan’s debut a few years ago.
Mike Sexton books his second 15th place finish of 2012
Mike Sexton may be best-known as the voice of the World Poker Tour, but lest you forget, Sexton reminded everyone that he is also a WSOP bracelet winner and Poker Hall of Famer, by booking his second 15th place finish of the 2012 WSOP. Both of Sexton’s deep runs have come in Stud tournaments, first in the $1,500 Seven-Card-Stud 8 or better event, and most recently in the $5,000 Seven-Card-Stud tournament.
152 players register for $10k Heads-Up No Limit Holdem tournament
The entire field of the $10k Heads-Up tournament looks like the Top 100 of the Global Poker Index rankings, as virtually every big name player in the game registered for the event. You have a better chance of finding a corner on a marble than finding a soft spot in this field, and if you think you have a cakewalk first-round opponent it’s likely you are playing one of the top Heads-Up online poker players!
Of course the tournament was not without controversy (which is turning into the story of the 2012 WSOP unfortunately) as many players were unhappy with the structure of the event and the first-round bye structure:
Fabrice Soulier was among the players unhappy with the tournament, which he Tweeted about: “@WSOP I have decided I would never play a HU at WSOP again until u guys fix the structure and the bye situation.”
