WPT: John Dolan Starts Strong at Seminole Hard Rock Showdown
Dolan also won the Beau Rivage Million Dollar Heater earlier this year
Even though the Florida stops on the WPT draw large, international crowds, it always seems like there is a local guy in the mix at these things. The Sunshine State is known for its long list of talented poker pros though, so it really isn’t all that surprising to see 2010 November Niner and Florida native John Dolan off to a fast start after Day 1 of the WPT’s second annual Seminole Hard Rock Showdown.
The $10,000 buy-in event drew 281 players on its opening day of action, but there is room for that number to grow, as registration is open until the start of Day 2 play on Thursday. While the field will grow a little, it is clear the event is not going to come anywhere close to the 433-player field it got last year.
At the end of the day, there were 209 players left in the field and Dolan was one of them. He ended the day second in chips thanks to a big hand which saw Dolan get in a preflop raising war holding A-K to another player’s pocket kings. Dolan managed to spike an ace on the turn and ended the day with 120,200 from his 30,000-chip starting stack.
The only player ahead of Dolan in the counts is David Nicholson, who finished the day as chip leader with 132,300. Dolan is not the only former November Niner in the top ten chip counts either. Chino Rheem spent much of the day as chip leader and finished eighth in the counts with 106,100. Other notables who finished up Day 1 with a big stack include Kyle Bowker (104,000), Jonathan Little (87,975), Andy Frankenberger (83,625), Ebony Kenney (78,000), Ashton Griffin (74,775), Matt Waxman (60,825), and Will Failla (58,300). Reigning champ in this event Taylor von Kriegenbergh also survived the day, but he is well below average with just over 20,000 chips. |
