Poker Around the World

Pius Heinz wins 2011 WSOP Main Event

It didn’t take long for the three remaining players in the World Series of Poker Main Event to tangle in a big pot, as no sooner had the players been introduced than Martin Staszko and Ben Lamb found themselves all-in pre-flop with Staszko holding pocket 7’s and Lamb K/J offsuit on the very first hand of the night. Lamb must have forgotten to recharge his “Run-Good” as he couldn’t out-flop Staszko’s small pair; the hand crippled Lamb and sent Staszko’s chip-count into Pius Heinz territory.

Staszko didn’t stop there however. Just moments later a huge hand developed between he and chip-leader Pius Heinz, and Staszko was able to pick-off a Heinz bluff with his pocket Kings, and within three hands Staszko had gone from short-stack to chip-leader! On the very next hand (Hand 4) Lamb would be eliminated from the WSOP Main Event in 3rd place when Staszko called his open-shove with Pocket Jacks. So in the first four hands Staszko picked up 77, KK, and JJ in a three-handed match!

Based on the pace at the outset, it seemed that the tournament might be over in 30 minutes, but instead Staszko and Heinz would end up in one of the longest heads-up battles in recent memory, playing 123 hands, with eight lead changes peppered in. Perhaps even more amazing than the sheer number of hands was the fact that neither player faced elimination until over 100 hands been played.

In the end the tournament came down to the inevitable coin-flip situation (which occurred post-flop) when Staszko held Qc9c and was up against the AhQh of Heinz. After a flop of KsTc7c Heinz moved in with just Ace-high and was called by the flush and straight draws of Staszko, but Heinz managed to dodge Staszko’s 12-outs on the Turn and River, taking control of the tournament in the process.

A few hands later it was all over, as Staszko shoved with Tc7c and ran into the AK offsuit of Heinz. Once again the board bricked-out and Pius Heinz became the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion –Germany’s first Main Event Champion.

Here is a look at the complete final table payouts from the 2011 WSOP Main Event:

1. Pius Heinz — $8,715,638
2. Martin Staszko — $5,433,086
3. Ben Lamb — $4,021,138
4. Matt Giannetti — $3,012,700
5. Phil Collins — $2,269,599
6. Eoghan O’Dea — $1,720,831
7. Badih Bounahra — $1,314,097
