Epic Poker League Suspends Ferguson and Lederer
Just 24 hours after U.S. District Attorney Preet Bharara called Full Tilt Poker a “global ponzi scheme” and amended the Black Friday civil suit to include Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer and Rafe Furst, the Epic Poker League announced that Ferguson and Lederer, both EPL card carrying members, have been suspended from the league.
The suspension was handed down by the EPL Standards and Conduct Committee which is headed by Stephen Martin, a former federal prosecutor.
“We’re not acting as judge and jury. We’re not barring them permanently from the league. All we did is take action to suspend them pending the outcome of the case,” Martin said in interview with BLUFF. “For us it’s very difficult to understand the facts of what has occurred. We’re not in a position to view that, but with the types of allegations, especially since they involve directly the poker community, we believe this is going to be the best course of action. ”
The indefinite suspension will be reviewed pending a resolution to the civil suit. Rafe Furst is not an EPL card holder and therefore his status was note up for review.
The Standards and Conduct Committee includes tournament director Matt Savage and players Alec Torelli, Eric Baldwin, Andy Bloch, Chad Brown, Joe Hachem, Mike McDonald, Alec Torelli and Nick Schulman. Bloch, who is a member of Team Full Tilt, recused himself from voting on this matter. Annie Duke, EPL Commissioner and brother of Lederer, is not involved in decisions made by the committee. Rather than wait for any official complaint to be filed with the committee the EPL was proactive in reviewing the matter.
“The League took it upon themselves. I was the one that informed the committee that the Department of Justice had taken this action against these two individuals. So then convened a meeting of the Standards and Conduct Committee to review it,” said Martin.
Martin felt that, despite Lederer and Ferguson not being charged with any criminal offense, the league needed to make a decision about the players’ eligibility.
“This is one of the situations where, if we don’t take action, we face the same criticism. You’re not taking action because it’s Annie’s brother or these are famous poker players,” said Martin. “What we try to do is be neutral in these issues. We think any time there is action by the Federal Government that involves criminal issues that then translate into civil asset forfeiture and allegations of involvement then we’re going to address the situations.” |
