Ken Griffin Wins WSOP No. 45 ($1,000 No-Limit Hold'em)
 Event no. 45, the $1,000 no-limit hold’em tournament, now belongs to Ken Griffin, a 34-year-old amateur from Houston, Texas who wasn’t even supposed to be at the WSOP at all this summer. He was supposed to be overseas in Afghanistan doing consulting work. His plans changed though, and he had to return home to Texas to help care for his ailing mother. He took a break from being a caretaker to make the quick trip to Vegas to take part in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em WSOP event and now he is able to provide for his mom better than ever before.
Griffin defeated a field of 2,890 players to bank an impressive US$455,356 for his first-place prize.
Griffin said he plans on using his new found wealth to assist his mother, who was recently diagnosed with a serious illness.
“I’m going to take care of her and be closer to home,” he said. “I’m going to be transferring money into her account as soon as I get it. You know, she’s a senior, working-class, she’s going through chemotherapy and medicine is expensive. She lives paycheck to paycheck, so I’m really looking forward to helping her out.”
