Zynga Hacker sentenced to server 2 Years

British hacker Ashley Mitchell has been sentenced to serve two years in prison after being convicted of computer misuse and four counts of money laundering.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty in February of hacking into the online gaming website Zynga and stealing 400 billion virtual chips. He later sold some of those chips on Facebook, picking up £53,612 from the site’s users. Had he sold all of the virtual chips, he could have netted approximately £7 million.

Zynga Poker is an application that is played on a variety of gaming portals that include Facebook, MySpace, MSN Games, Yahoo!, the iPhone and Android. The company has over 50 million daily users and has offers other popular games such as Farmville, Cafe World, Mafia Wars and Cityville.

Though his defense team tried to argue that Zynga would not have suffered any losses, because they could simply create additional virtual chips, Judge Philip Wassall of the Exeter crown court wasn’t buying it.

“The sentence has to reflect the impact on public confidence in security systems and online business when someone breaches security in this way,” he said.

Mitchell also received an additional 30 week sentence for violating an earlier suspended sentence after hacking into his previous employer’s network in 2008.

What exactly is Protection Play?

We all do it, but did we know there’s a real definition behind it?

What am I talking about? Here is a definition of Protection Play:

Protection in poker is a bet made with a strong but vulnerable hand, such as top pair when straight or flush draws are possible. The bet forces opponents with draws to either call with insufficient pot odds, or to fold, both of which are profitable for the betting player. By contrast, if he failed to protect his hand, another player could draw out on him at no cost, meaning he gets no value from his made hand.

A protection play differs from a bluff in that the bluff can win only when the opponent folds, while protection bet is made with a hand that is likely to win a showdown, but isn't strong enough for slow playing.

The importance of protection increases when there are multiple opponents. For example, if a hand is currently the best, but each of four opponents has a 1-in-6 chance of drawing an out, the four opponents combined become the favorite to win, even though each one is individually an underdog. With a protection bet, some or all of them may fold, leaving fewer opponents and a better chance of winning.

The term protection is also often heard in the context of an all-in player. A bet by an opponent serves to protect the all-in player by reducing the number of opponents the all-in player must beat. To deliberately make such a bet solely to protect another player's hand constitutes collusion.

A slight but big difference between a bluff and protection!
