18 Year Old Wins Fortune Playing Online Poker
It’s every poker player’s dream – turning mere peanuts into a fortune. And apparently, 18-year-old Portuguese poker prodigy Jose Macedo did just that.
With just $30, Macedo played online poker until $30 became $2 million, this according to Macedo, who told his tale in the Two Plus Two poker forum.
Raised solely by his widowed mother, Macedo wrote: “My Mum would always tell me that my father admired brave men, that he admired men who took risks and took life by the horns.”
Always talented at math, at aged 16, Macedo was inspired by poker pro Tom “Durrr” Dwan and began learning everything he could about the game of poker.
He wrote, “A friend of mine had been playing poker for play money and told me a story about this guy named Durrrr. How he had started with nothing, just a poor college kid, and using his wits and hard work, created for himself a fortune by mastering this game. I was captivated. I got every poker book I could find at the local bookstore (I couldn’t afford to buy any and Poker was still a secret, so I’d sneak the books into the bathroom to read them) and spent 2 months reading and analyzing them – Mathematics of poker, Sklanky’s theory of poker, Harrington on Hold’em, Gus Hansen’s Every Hand Revealed, and more. I was also watching every poker show I could and studying all of their plays, all the way down to the smallest little bet or fold. As I was studying the game, I would test my theories and discoveries on the play money tables, where over time I accumulated a million play chips.”
Macedo then invested $30 to play on an online poker site and began at the 1c/2c cash tables for 6-10 hours everyday, eventually turning his $30 into $2,500 over the course of a month. He began working his way up in the stakes until he reached $5/$10 NL Hold’em games – which is when he began to experience a bit of a losing streak, but Macedo pressed on, talked to pros in the poker circuit and began to grind back up. At his present level, Macedo is playing $25/$50 and $50/$100 heads-up NL Hold’em and boasts over $2 million in poker winnings.

Many may think that poker is a game of luck rather than skill but real poker players know better…
We know it is a game of emotional and mathematical calculations and no one said it better than Mark Pilarski "The smarter you play, the luckier you'll be."
Therefore, I vow to smarten up and play the game the way it was meant to be playd, with smarts and proper calculation! I may not be the next 18 year old to win $2Million but I sure can be the next XX years old too! ;-)

Set Limits when Playing Poker
Most poker pros suggest deciding on a limit before sitting down to play and we must agree. The term of playing limit has nothing to do with the term of bankroll. Your playing limit is simply the amount of money you would feel comfortable playing. No one can be indifferent when playing his own money and therefore they cannot remain calm when it comes to losing it. Losing funds can turn you off from the game, for 2 main reasons;
1. If you lose, you will have a bad memory of the game that left you with no money at all, when it is in fact your fault for not being responsible and for not thinking through your actions.
2. When playing with the fear of losing a lot of money and money that you can’t afford to lose, you will more than likely end up losing, unfortunately. Think about this one for a while. You will most certainly lose because your game will be affected by the constant frustration that arises from your worries for your money.
So, avoid these situations by playing an amount you wouldn't care about. Just think of it as if it was an expense to buy a game, and now you are playing that game you paid for. This way the worries can be ignored and your playing style can really become what it needs to.
If you have a normal profession or one more basis of profits, then the above strategy should suit your case. But when you plan to play poker for an income, then stuff gets difficult. A professional poker player has no source but his bankroll. The bankroll has at all times to remain intact so it can generate income. Therefore you are urged to find your comfort level and decide on what your limit is and stick with that in order to gradually grow.
A professional poker player has learned his limits by now. He knows exactly how much he is playing, and he knows how much he should leave online and how much to put in a bank or invest in the stock market after a win. Do not increase a good playing limit until you’ve hit your comfort level and are ready to part with a higher bankroll.
Poker is a game that is enjoyed by thousands of men and women all over the world and we at SunPoker are dedicated to keeping it as enjoyment without any frustration.
