About Baden
Baden is a spa town and medieval city in Lower Austria, Austria, 26 kilometres south of Vienna, with a population of 25,2075. Frequently, the name is given as Baden bei Wien (Baden near Vienna); this name, however, is not official, but can be used to distinguish it from other cities of the same name such as Baden-Baden or Baden, Switzerland. Baden is home to Baden Grand Casino which is home to the European Poker Championships (Poker EM) October 10-12, 2008.

Baden is situated at the mouth of the romantic Helenental, on the banks of the Schwechat, and used to be the principal summer resort of the wealthy inhabitants of Vienna, the neighbouring capital. It possesses a Kurhaus, fifteen bathing-establishments, a parish church in late Gothic style, and a town-hall, which contains archives. The warm baths, which gave name to the town, are thirteen in number, with a temperature of from 22°C (72°F) to 36°C (97°F), and contain, as chief ingredient, sulphate of lime. They rise for the most part at the foot of the Calvarienberg (1070 ft.), which is composed of dolomitic limestone, and are mostly used for bathing purposes. Baden is surrounded by about 120 vineyards and has about 70 wine pubs (Heurigen).

Sandra Naujoks Wins the First Texas Hold'em European Poker Championship at Grand Casino Baden

14.10.2008 - Casinos Austria
The European Championship title goes to Germany.

As if she’d prophesied it. When only four finalists were still at the table in the Texas Hold’em European Poker Championship at Grand Casino Baden, the jokes of Stefan Rapp (AUT) got to be too much for Sandra Naujoks (GER). “The Austrians are superfluous,” resounded his jolting remark. And she was right. Satellite winner and one of the night’s surprises, Vorarlberg’s Robert Riedmann was forced to leave the final table because of Alex Kravtchenko (RUS). Then it was over for Rapp, behind which Naujoks was the decisive force. Rapp lost with a pair of fours against a pair of tens. Naujoks went into the final heads-up as a short stake, but then she kept taking Kravtchenko’s chips and remained tough until the very end. The 27-year-old from Berlin stole the victory from the WSOP bracelet winner Kravtchenko with a pair of eights.

After a short time chip leader and the driving force, Kravtchenko was the favourite at the final table in the Texas Hold’em European Championship on 12 October at Grand Casino Baden until the final heads-up. The table was a colourful mix: two WSOP bracelet winners, Kravtchenko and Ivo “the chess master” Donev, three satellite winners, well-known poker greats such as Stefan Rapp and Harry “Absolute” Casagrande and loyal Casinos Austria guests. It was precisely this combination which made the final table such a thrill.

“And I’m sitting at the final table.”

Coming to the table as a short stake, Manutscher Parsian (AUT) had to exit the table after just a while. The native of Vienna was very composed, however: “It wasn’t about the money, but about the honour and fun of playing in such as fabulous tournament.” A little later it was over for Cecil Motschmann (GER). His friend Johann Fest, the Baden Open winner, had taken him to the Casinos Austria European Poker Championship. Vienna’s Werner Fasching, who pokered his way to the Texas Hold’em poker final and the final table via one of the 50 Euro satellites and the monthly final, took eight place. “I actually don’t know much about the game and am sitting at the final table,” he said with pleasure and pride just before the game. Tyrolean Mike Wallnöfer was also proud, qualifying via a supersatellite (Texas Hold’em European Championship Monthly Final: buy-in € 300). Travelling with him, his fans and poker group (his brother-in-law and two friends) were convinced of his win until the very end, when he took seventh place. Ivo “the chess master” Donev was the next to bid farewell. In this tournament Harry “Absolute” Casagrande’s card protector and lucky charm got him just fifth place, so that left just four and the way free for the rookie of the year: Sandra Naujoks.
